Hi, I’m Rachel, or “Moony” on trail! I am a first time thru hiker, living in Denver, CO, pursuing a northbound hike of the Pacific Crest Trail beginning in May 2023. This blog is an attempt to convince my family and friends that it is completely normal to want to hike 2600+ miles by myself, shower only occasionally, and mail myself the food and gear I need along the way. I believe that hiking has the power to exercise and heal the mind. In addition to my hike, I am working with HIKE for Mental Health (https://www.hikeformentalhealth.org/hikers/rachel-hikes-for-mental-health/) to spread awareness and raise money for trail conservation and mental health research.

It was finally time to slow down in NorCal - to jump in the lakes, to take lunch naps, and to pick up all the large pinecones. It was also time to speed up - to start picking up mileage.
Sierra… Meet NorCal! (July 2023)
The transition into NorCal is one that I thought about for many days before it happened, as it represented an accomplishment that I truly did not know if I would achieve. Along the way, I learned that this transition had blurred lines, as I slowly (I repeat, slowly) hiked out of the snow and transitioned into the new NorCal terrain.
